Medical English for Nurses and

Allied Health Professions

Employers in some parts of the United States and in certain employment settings are reporting great difficulty in attracting and retaining an adequate number of nurses and allied health professionals at all levels. Many employers are relying on foreign-educated health care workers to fill open positions. ASTAR offers English as Foreign Language classes, medical English, and an academic placement program for international students seeking nursing and allied health careers in the United States. For Astar students who already have advanced medical training in their countries, we will assist in contacting the appropriate licensing authority to help them investigate how they can become licensed health care workers in the United States. (Students must be eligible to work in the United States). Go to our Academic and Career Placement Service for more details.

Classes emphasize practical language instruction through thematic health units built around most the common illnesses and treatments options, anatomy, administrative procedures, counseling jargon, medical record keeping, drug dosing measurements, moving and handling patients, patient education, infection control, and typical patient communication during phone calls and while giving personal care.
Important Note: Medical personnel interested in this program must have a 500 or higher TOEFL to attend this course. It you have less than a 500 TOEFL, you may attend our regular general English classes and receive specialized tutoring in medical English.
The program also includes:
Tours of local university medical programs and organizations;
Guest lecturers on medical topics; and
Anatomical art classes to expand your vocabulary;
On-line practice of medical terms; and
Videos of medical programs.
