¡°People are finally beginning to pay attention to Mandarin Chinese as a major cultural and economic prospect for students. Parents want their children to have an edge, and they see Chinese as helping them get that. I¡¯ve heard from people who say: ¡°Forget the engineering. Learn the foreign language. If you want a job, the foreign language is going to sell your engineering¡±.

Why Study Chinese?

1.3 billion Chinese can't be wrong. The Chinese population of 1.3 billion makes up one third of the world¡¯s population. There are also large Chinese speaking populations in Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.  Chinese is even the 3rd most spoken language in the United States after English and Spanish. No other language allows you to speak with such a large portion of the world!

China has taken important steps to open its doors and integrate itself into the world trade system. The Chinese World Trade Organization commitments should further open China¡¯s markets to help level the playing field for U.S. exports. China is now one of the most important markets for U.S. exports and has the 3rd largest economy in the world. China¡¯s rising economic and political future make it essential to learn about this giant country, its rich history, language and culture.
