Certificated Medication Aide

A Certificated Medication Aide (CMA) can administer medications in assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers, drug clinics, group homes, shelters and penitentiaries. Job duties of a medication aide include preparing, administering and maintaining medications, assisting clients with self-administration of prescribed medications, asepsis, basic pharmacology and documentation. Adding a registered medication aide certification onto a current CNA license can increase hourly wages to $16 - $20 per hour.

Course Description:

Astar’s 68-hour course teaches basic techniques and safety procedures for medication administration as well as classifications and side effects of drugs.  Course hours are divided into theory classes (48 hours) and practical clinical hours (20 hours) at our partner care facility.  Upon graduation, students will be eligible to take the state competency exam with the Virginia Board of Nursing. 

Enrollment Requirements:

  • To enroll in the course, all students must meet the following requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older (valid photo ID required- driver’s license, passport, etc.)

Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Certification (2-year certifications available through Astar for an additional $97)

  • Tuberculosis (TB) test (PPD) showing negative results within the past 6 months or a 

  • chest x-ray if there are positive results

  • Copy of Nurse Aide license for Virginia or PCA/HHA certificate

  • Copy of Hepatitis B Vaccine Record or signed Declination Letter

  • Advanced English Proficiency (determined by placement test)

  • Valid Social Security Card

Duration: 68 hours

Schedule:  

  • Classroom Hours (48 hours total) - Evenings on Monday – Friday; 5:30pm to 9:30pm

  • Includes 8 hours in Astar’s skills lab

  • 30-minute lunch break, additional two 15-minute breaks

  • Skills Practice Hours (20 hours total) – Daytime for 3 Days - 7:00AM – 1:30PM

  • Includes skills lab hours

  • 30-minute lunch break, additional two 15-minute breaks

*Assistance with registration for the state licensure exam requires additional fee.

*Only students who: (1) hold a current CPR certification valid for at least 3 months after the initially planned date of completion for their specific program, (2) completed this CPR certification BEFORE their registration date for Astar’s program, and (3) who submit a copy of the certification BEFORE the first day of class will be excused from Astar’s CPR course.   All other students are required to pay the $100 fee and complete Astar’s BLS CPR course.

*Any missed class time will require a fee of $35/hour for make-up hours.
