 Electrocardiogram (EKG)  Training Program

 An Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) Technician monitor, test and record the electrical activity of the heart using EKG equipment to determine the cardiovascular health of a patient.  These technicians work alongside doctor’s in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, long term care facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, doctor’s offices, occupational care clinics, cardiology specialty centers, walk-in clinics and physical therapy clinics.   Main job duties of an EKG Technician include monitoring patient blood pressure, performing diagnostic tests directly on patients, monitoring and sterilizing EKG equipment and recording and tracking patient records.  Adding an EKG certification onto a current CNA license can increase hourly wages to $21 - $27/hour.

Course Description:

Astar’s 80-hour course teaches basic techniques and safety procedures for conducting EKG testing as well as measuring and recording the results.   Course hours are divided into theory classes (60 hours) and practical clinical hours (20 hours) at our partner care facility.  Upon graduation, students will be eligible to take the competency exam to become certified in the state of Virginia.

Enrollment Requirements:

  • To enroll in the course, all students must meet the following requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older (valid photo ID required- driver’s license, passport, etc.)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Certification (2 year certifications available through Astar for an additional $97)

  • Tuberculosis (TB) test (PPD) showing negative results within the past 6 months or a 

  • chest x-ray if there are positive results

  • Copy of Nurse Aide license for Virginia or PCA/HHA certificate (if you have one)

  • Copy of Hepatitis B Vaccine Record or signed Declination Letter

  • Advanced English Proficiency (determined by placement test)

  • Valid Social Security Card or work permit

Duration: 80 Hours (13 days total)

Schedule:  

  • Classroom Hours (10 Days, 60 hours total) - Monday to Friday, or Weekends; 9:00am to 4:00pm

  • Includes 20 hours in Astar’s skills lab

  • 30-minute lunch break, additional two 15-minute breaks

  • Clinical Hours (3 days, 20 hours total) - Monday to Friday, or weekends; 2 days from  6:45am to 3:45pm and 1 half day from 6:45am – 10:45am

  • 30-minute lunch break, additional two 15-minute breaks

**Students who already hold a CPR certification that is valid for 3 months past their date of completion must submit a copy BEFORE the first day of class and will be excused from taking CPR with Astar.   All other students are required to pay Astar’s $100 fee for CPR.**

 

*Any missed class time will require a fee of $35/hour for make-up hours.
