Celebrating Student Scarleth Lin!

June 05, 2020

Hard working and dedicated are two words that describe most Astar graduates.  However, this month we are highlighting a student named Scarleth Lin who takes these words to a whole different level!!  Scarleth is a single mother of 2 daughters, who are now 14 years old and 10 years old.  She studied in a university program in her home country and became a commercial engineer.  However, due to life circumstances and the economy, she was not able to find a job in this field.  After coming to the U.S. as an immigrant, she worked in very difficult jobs including construction and cleaning schools.  Once she heard about Astar’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, she knew it was a great opportunity to study and work in a healthcare job where she could help people with their daily living activities and continue to advance her career.  After putting in SO much hard work and dedication, she finished Astar’s Certified Nursing Assistant program in early 2019 and started working at Astar’s partner care facility where she completed her practical training during the CNA program.

After about a year of working as a CNA, she took the second step and join Astar’s Certified Medication Aide (CMA) program to gain an extra certification that helps her earn more.  Being an immigrant to the U.S., it has not been an easy journey for Scarleth but she has powered through it and is truly turning her life around.  Astar’s programs have helped her start a new career where she can work in the field she studied and put those skills to use to help others.  Congratulations on the next step of your journey Scarleth!!

Congratulations Komeshia!!!

April 05, 2020

This week, Astar is highlighting student Komeshia Washington of Fredericksburg, Virginia.  She is what we like to call a “success story”! Komeshia was a Patient Care Aide (PCA) since 2015 until she came across Astar Education Institute (yep, that’s us!).  After learning about our Certified Nursing Assistant program, she was excited to hear of this opportunity to advance her career, learn new skills and increase her income in 4 months flat.

Going back to school is never easy. However, for Komeshia it was especially overwhelming, considering she is a single and working mother of two daughters and was commuting almost two hours each day for school! Luckily, she was able to take advantage of Astar’s weekend classes so she could study without cutting her hours.

Once she started classes with her teachers, Ms. Williams and Ms. Mambo, she officially had no regrets!  Komeshia expresses, “Once in the class, the teacher, Ms. Williams, was more than helpful and was open to answering any questions I may have had.  For clinicals, I had Ms. Mambo and even with COVID-19, she was still hands on with us and told us how we can improve in our areas of weakness for our skills lab.”

Komeshia’s hard work and motivation to reach her goals is truly inspiring to all and not only is she a role model for her two daughters, but also all current and potential students at Astar.  Now Komeshia had graduated from our CNA program and as she says, “Thanks to Astar, I’m currently working as a CNA.  Astar is a great school to do your training!”.  So go ahead and give Komeshia and the rest of her graduating class a “CONGRATULATIONS!!!!” as we sure are!!

To sign up for Astar’s training program to become a PCA or CNA, email carly@admissions.org today to learn how we can get you a valuable certification and a rewarding job as a caregiver.

EKG Technician Training - You can do it!

February 24, 2020

Have you ever heard of EKG testing? While it might sound like an advanced medical skill, you can actually learn everything needed to become a successful EKG technician in less than 1 month!

EKG technician's make around $21 - $27 per hour by monitoring cardiovascular health with specific equipment.  This is important for hospitals, doctor's offices and a variety of specialty clinics (which all have jobs available).

Career Fair at Patriot High School

January 01, 2020

Astar sends big thanks to Patriot High School, located in Nokesville, VA, for allowing us to participate in their annual career fair.  It was great to talk with local students who are thinking about what they want to study after graduation.  There was such a great turn out of students interested in the nursing field and Astar was able to offer them many different opportunities to get a head start on their college credits through the Nursing Assistant and EKG Technician programs.

How do you go about getting college credit through Astar courses, you might ask?  Depending on the school, students who study in university or college level programs for nursing, EMT, LPN or other medical programs are able to skip basic courses if they have a CNA certification and/or work experience.  Astar offers discounted prices compared to these university programs so students will save time and money by taking this path and completing Astar's certification programs before starting their university coursework.
