CMA-Certified Medication Aide Certification Program

A Medication Aide (MA) is allowed to administer medications in assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers, drug clinics, group homes, shelters and penitentiaries.   Job duties of a medication aide include preparing, administering and maintaining medications, assisting clients with self-administration of prescribed medications, asepsis, basic pharmacology and documentation.  Adding a registered medication aide certification onto a current CNA license can increase hourly wages.

An EKG Technician monitors, tests and records the electrical activity of the heart using EKG equipment, which helps determine the cardiovascular health of a patient.  They work in hospitals, long term care facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, doctor's offices, physical therapy clinics and more.   Job duties of EKG technicians include monitoring patient blood pressure, performing diagnostic tests, monitoring and sterilizing EKG equipment and recording and tracking patient records.  Adding EKG training onto a current PCA or CNA license can significantly increase hourly wages and provide many new job opportunities at a range of different facilities.

Astar’s Medical English program is a sub-specialty for career-specific language acquisition.  The communication and functional needs of medical professionals are unique, contextualized and focused.  This course will introduce the student to the technical vocabulary, communication techniques and communication contexts needed to successfully function as a caregiver.  This class makes a great preparation program for non-native English speaker who is interested in continuing their education into one of Astar’s caregiver classes including Patient Care Aide (PCA) and Nursing Assistant.  This course will introduce students to the relevant English vocabulary, functional conversations, pronunciation and advanced listening skills needed for the medical/long term care-giver.  Furthermore, the course focuses on the main stages of medical and care-taking communication including active listening, verbal expression, record keeping, voice management, reading and understanding written instructions and non-verbal expression.
